AI Digital Employee Assists Recruiters

Key Points

  • A “digital employee” (or digey) is an AI‑powered software robot that can interact with users, understand natural‑language requests, and execute tasks via API and automation skills.
  • In the recruiting example, Cassie spends most of her day on manual, repetitive work—searching LinkedIn, copy‑pasting candidate data into spreadsheets, and handling messaging and scheduling.
  • By delegating these low‑value activities to a digital employee named Henry, Cassie can ask the bot to perform searches, extract candidate information, and populate spreadsheets automatically.
  • This automation frees Cassie to focus on higher‑value activities such as resume analysis, interview preparation, and strategic decision‑making that require human intuition and expertise.
  • Overall, digital employees act as personal assistants that boost productivity, reduce administrative overhead, and enhance the human workforce’s impact on core tasks.

0:00Hi, everybody. 0:01Let's talk about digital employees, or digeys. 0:04I'm Leslie Chau with IBM Automation. 0:06What is a digital employee? 0:08What can it do for you? 0:09And what value does it bring to the human workforce? 0:13Let's start by looking at an example. 0:15I'd like you to meet Cassie. 0:21Cassie is a recruiter. 0:25She helps people like Ava. 0:30Ava is a manager. 0:33And Ava's looking to hire for her team. 0:37Cassie helps Ava with the end-to-end hiring process. 0:40Among other things that she does, she helps Ava look for candidates for her job. 0:48Her typical workflow looks something like this. 0:51She starts by using LinkedIn recruiter to search for and find the right candidates for the job. 1:01She then goes through the search results and finds matching candidates that are qualified for the job. 1:10She then messages these candidates and schedules a screening interview 1:16to make sure that they are the right match for Ava. 1:20And then finally, when she has the right list of short-listed candidates, 1:24she compiles that list into a spreadsheet 1:27so that Ava can then proceed to the next step. 1:34Now, Cassie. She wants to spend more of her time doing this. 1:41These are higher value tasks, like reviewing resumes or thoughtfully preparing for the screening interview 1:49so that she can have a best set of candidates for Ava. 1:54She also knows that as a recruiter, this is where she can really flex her skills. 1:59But instead, she spends most of her day on manual and repetitive tasks. 2:05These are things like combing through a list of candidates in the search results. 2:15Later in the process, when she's come up with the shortlist of candidates, 2:19she spends a lot of her time copy/pasting. 2:24She copy/pastes information from LinkedIn into the spreadsheet 2:28to prepare that for Ava to review. 2:31She also spends a lot of her time in administrative tasks like messaging Ava, 2:36messaging the candidates, scheduling time with the candidates. 2:39Now, wouldn't it be great if Cassie had her own personal helper 2:43that can help her do these manual tasks? 2:46So that she can focus on some of these more higher value tasks 2:50that really require, you know, the human skills and the intuition and the analytics. 2:57This is where the digital employee comes in. 3:00I'd like you to meet HenRy. 3:04Henry as an HR digital employee and Cassie's new sidekick. 3:09The digital employees have three main functions. 3:14First, it can interact with the world around it. 3:17It can interact with Cassie. 3:20Second, it has AI and it can interpret what is being asked to do. 3:27And finally it can do work. 3:32But just like human employees, digital employees have a set of job skills. 3:42For digital employees, 3:43these are essentially API calls and software robotics. 3:55These skills help the digital employee interact with systems 4:00such as LinkedIn and spreadsheets on behalf of Cassie. 4:06So that all Cassi has to do is ask. 4:10Cassie asks HenRy to do something 4:16and HenRy, in turn, uses his AI to interpret what that ask is 4:20and then match it to the skills that it has to do the work for Cassie. 4:26In this example, Cassie can simply ask HenRy to do the search for the candidates in LinkedIn. 4:33Now HenRy can interpret that and quickly match it to the LinkedIn skill that it has. 4:39So it will call the LinkedIn API to do the search. 4:44It can even go one step further and message the right candidates 4:48and schedule a time for Cassie to have the screening interviews with the candidates. 4:54Later on the process, Cassie can ask HenRy to take the short-listed candidates and compiled them into lists in the spreadsheet. 5:03HenRy will interpret that and match it to its spreadsheet skill. 5:10It will manually copy/paste each and every row of the short lists into the spreadsheet 5:16and can even go and signal to Ava when that list is ready for her to review. 5:24This was a very simple example, but it shows you how a digital employee can help Cassie save hours of time of manual work. 5:34Now Cassie can focus some more of her attention on higher value work 5:39and where she can spend more of her time now reviewing resumes 5:43and thoughtfully preparing for those interviews so that she can come up with a better list of candidates for Ava. 5:50She can even start differentiating herself now from her peers 5:55by writing thoughtful recommendations to Ava so Ava can make a better decision and the next steps. 6:03This was a quick overview of digital employees. 6:07If you would like to learn more about digital employees such as how you actually build one, 6:11be sure to smash that "Subscribe" button. 6:14If you liked the video or have a question or comment, 6:19be sure to hit that "Like" button and leave your comment in the comments section. 6:23Thank you so much for your time.
