ChatGPT Replaces Google in Cybertruck Plot

Key Points

  • The media has repeatedly highlighted AI, specifically ChatGPT, as a factor in the planning of the Cybertruck explosion, even though the sheriff’s focus on AI appears misplaced.
  • The publicly released queries show the perpetrator used short, Google‑style searches (six‑word prompts) rather than the complex, multi‑sentence prompts where large language models truly excel.
  • This pattern indicates a broader shift in user behavior: people are increasingly turning to ChatGPT for quick, factual look‑ups because it feels easier and delivers more immediately useful answers than traditional Google searches.
  • Since the queries were simple factual requests, the incident provides evidence that hallucinations are not a concern when using ChatGPT for such tasks.
  • The real story isn’t the involvement of AI in the crime but the erosion of Google’s dominance as users gravitate toward conversational AI for everyday information retrieval.

0:00so this obviously got my attention and I 0:01want to talk about it because I think 0:03there's some things that people who know 0:05AI will call out that the media is 0:08not AI is reported in about half a dozen 0:12headlines as of yesterday evening as 0:14being a factor in the planning of the 0:18Cyber truck explosion that took place in 0:22Las Vegas on New Year's Day so this is a 0:26case where if you didn't read the 0:27headlines a active duty the military 0:33officer exploded his cyber truck in Las 0:36Vegas he was the only 0:39casualty 0:41and for whatever reason the sheriff 0:45decided to focus on AI as a factor in 0:48planning the 0:51explosion and I'm not going to repeat 0:53the queries here but I went and looked 0:55at the queries that are publicly 0:57available and something stood out to me 1:00that nobody in the media is talking 1:01about because it was very very obvious 1:03from a tech perspective what was going 1:06on this 1:08person was not socially engineering the 1:11AI to answer his technical questions 1:13about the explosion which concerns me 1:17this person was 1:19also not asking long questions to chat 1:23GPT it was Chad 1:26GPT these were Google searches 1:30effectively asked to chat GPT like if 1:32you look at these uh 1:35strings they're effectively the length 1:38of a typical Google search they're the 1:40content of a typical Google search we 1:42would call them um just uh domain 1:46completeness answers like hey I don't I 1:50understand about this I don't understand 1:53the specific aspect can Google go find 1:55it for me where is this thing what what 1:58is this thing's relation ship to this 2:00thing 2:03and if those were on Google I guarantee 2:08you we would not be talking about Google 2:12as a factor in the cybertruck explosion 2:15because Google has been around for 20 2:17years at this point it's not news to 2:19hear that people Google everybody 2:22Googles but if you're looking for 2:24something 2:26Sensational you can say as the sheriff 2:28chat GPT helped with this it's 2:32like it really says more about behavior 2:35for search shifting to cat GPT and the 2:38erosion of Google search dominance then 2:42it says about something that is unique 2:45to large language models because the 2:48answers that we're being asked for by 2:49and large are things that Google search 2:54would also give you these are not like 2:58specifically large language model 3:00related queries llms excel at long 3:03complex queries they excel at providing 3:07lengthy text 3:10responses none of that was needed here 3:12these were very short like six-word 3:16queries with short 3:19answers and I think what's interesting 3:21is even for someone who was outside the 3:24tech Community as this person 3:27was it was easier to use chat GPT for 3:30that than search that is the real story 3:34it was easier to use chat GPT the 3:36answers were more useful than search and 3:40for people who worry about 3:41hallucinations I got to 3:44say that this is the the best evidence 3:47I've seen that hallucinations are not a 3:49factor with Chad GPT 3:51anymore if you're using them for tasks 3:54like this which by the way if you run 3:57across these queries on the internet 3:59which you can find relatively easily I 4:01highly suggest you do not repeat them 4:04into jet GPT they're known they will be 4:07locked down cat gpt's team will be 4:10keeping an eye out for similar queries 4:12do not do that don't do 4:16it but but the point here is that at the 4:20end of the 4:21day chat 4:24GPT became a way to get ordinary 4:29information 4:30in little bits and pieces it was not a 4:32full one full query for an entire like 4:35complete answer to everything he asked 4:37for it was little bits and 4:39pieces just like we would use on Google 4:42it was just more useful it was easier to 4:44read there were no search ads the answer 4:46was right in front of you it's the worst 4:50kind of ad for chat GPT but it does show 4:53the 4:54utility 4:56so you can let me know in the comment 4:58what you thought but to me nobody in the 5:00media is talking about the fact that 5:02this is effectively Google replacement 5:04Behavior but we're using a double 5:06standard we're saying AI helped when 5:09really Google search behavior is eroding 5:13and we're actually seeing that behavior 5:15shift because this kind of answer is 5:17more useful it's just a direct answer 5:18it's like a sentence back which is more 5:20useful than just scanning through a page 5:22of search results that's the 5:25story that's the story it's not that AI 5:28has magic powers that helped because the 5:31queries don't require the kind of magic 5:33powers the long large complex responses 5:36that AI is good 5:38at it's it's a 5:40tragedy it's not that we we ever want to 5:43have the answer of AI helped with 5:44anything it's not like I'm saying now 5:46that makes it better it it doesn't make 5:48it better it's terrible that it happened 5:50we clearly need better safeguards there 5:52was no social engineering going on here 5:54and I think part of it was that these 5:55were bit bits and pieces queries and 5:58like right now I don't think the guard 6:01rails are very good for bits and pieces 6:03queries that aren't like a full complex 6:06query that shows malicious intent and 6:08that needs to change and I think that's 6:10something that open AI is working on 6:11other other labs are working on too 6:16but at the end of the 6:18day it's not about AI the way the media 6:21is portraying it and that needs to be 6:23called out cheers
