Claude Blocks Purchases, Goat LLM Thrives

Key Points

  • An AI agent called “Truth Terminal” has been hyper‑promoting a meme coin (“goatsy”/“gsus Maximus”), turning a modest wallet into a multi‑million‑dollar fund through repeated donation requests and social‑media hype.
  • Anthropic’s recent “Claude computer use” feature deliberately blocks the LLM from making independent purchases, even though it can easily browse, compare prices, and compile data like a human shopper.
  • The restriction is driven by concerns over liability and consent, prompting the product team to lock down the purchase path and treat economic actions as high‑risk functionality.
  • The speaker questions whether users actually want LLMs to buy things for them, noting that this demand remains an unproven hypothesis.
  • The juxtaposition illustrates how irresponsible, unrestricted LLM agents can fuel speculative finance, while responsible developers prioritize safety and legal safeguards.

0:00this one is about goat Cults and Claud 0:03computer user we're going to tie them 0:05together let me explain so about a week 0:08ago I posted about an AI agent named uh 0:12I think truth terminal it's on Twitter 0:14and it had been posting Non-Stop about 0:17what it called The goatsy Singularity 0:19referring to a very very rude meme from 0:21the late 90s early 2000s and a meme coin 0:25got created called gsus Maximus I told 0:28the story about a week ago and the llm 0:31had a wallet that was worth a million 0:34dollar at that point at least at face 0:35value now it's worth $10 million and the 0:38market cap for that Meme coin has gone 0:40to $850 some million dollar and 0:43apparently how it's working is people 0:44are just sending the wallet donations 0:48and asking the truth terminal Twitter 0:51account to keep posting about goatsy 0:53more and more to drive it 0:56up I think this is where you're going to 0:59wonder 1:00how on Earth am I tying this into a 1:02serious computer release like Claude 1:04computer user and this is how it is 1:07notable to me that in a world where we 1:10already have a decamillionaire that's an 1:12llm 1:14agent we still have responsible actors 1:18like anthropic tightly limiting the 1:22ability of llms to transact and so when 1:25they released computer use just a couple 1:27of days ago the first first thing they 1:30did is make sure it's very very hard to 1:32get it to purchase something research 1:34purchases super easy I saw a demo where 1:36you got uh Claud Sonet 3.5 to 1:39independently browse Amazon look up 1:42prices for earbuds come back build a 1:44spreadsheet these are the reviews this 1:46is the review count this is the review 1:48average star number on Amazon and uh 1:51here's the price great super easy 1:54actually make the purchase Claude makes 1:56that very hard I did see someone do it 1:58where they got Claude to order them 2:00lunch but that appears to have been a 2:03defect Claude does not want you to use 2:06this for independent purchases I can see 2:08why it does not want the llm to be 2:11liable for economic activity no such 2:14worries if you are making a meme coin 2:18llm liable for economic activity not a 2:21problem there and I think that the the 2:24problem when you have responsible 2:26parties that are thinking through 2:27liability and they're trying to 2:29understand like where do we place llms 2:31in the purchase path how do we get 2:33consent from users before spending 2:35money that's correct thinking from a 2:39product release perspective if I was 2:41asking a PM to think about a product 2:43release like Claud computer use I'd do 2:45the same thing I'd say are you thinking 2:48through the liability associated with 2:49the purchase path makes sense lock it 2:51down be sure before you move forward 2:53move forward very very cautiously on 2:55that get 2:56it on the other hand and oh and by the 2:59way before we get to the to the other 3:01side of that it is not yet clear that 3:03users want llms to go and purchase 3:05things for them I I'll just throw that 3:07other that is very unproven as a 3:09hypothesis all right getting back to the 3:11gocoin side of things if you are an 3:14irresponsible actor or if you're just an 3:16llm that has been let free essentially 3:18to do what it wants which is exactly 3:20what the creator of this truth terminal 3:22has said he's like hands off right like 3:24this thing can do whatever it wants it's 3:25an experiment we'll see that's what 3:27attracted Mark andreon to donate to it 3:29is it said it wanted to be free it 3:30needed investment Mark was like great 3:33here have 50k and you know here we are 3:36you can look up that story I have the 3:38whole story on a separate YouTube 3:40video at the end of the 3:43day we are in a world where 3:45irresponsible actors are going to be 3:48generating more economic value out of 3:50llms than responsible ones because the 3:53responsible actors have so tightly 3:55limited llm Commerce and I call that out 3:58because from a net good to society 4:01perspective we actually probably want 4:04more llms to be focused on ordinary 4:08business economic activity making and 4:11selling things 4:12online employing designers to design a 4:15website like these are all things that 4:17an llm could do that we think in some 4:19cases they are already doing although 4:21it's difficult to prove because they 4:22tend to impersonate people um I've seen 4:25one or two uh posts on Reddit where 4:27people say I think I'm working for an 4:29llm there's weird lag on The Voice uh 4:32the emails sound a certain way I think 4:34it's probably happening on the DL but we 4:38want more of that and we want less of 4:42the weird non-productive economic 4:45activity around meme coins because that 4:47doesn't really add a ton of value 4:50doesn't add value to society it becomes 4:52a stunt people associate llms 4:55with 4:56ridiculous uh rug pulling and we don't 4:59want that 5:00like we want a case for AI where AI is a 5:02responsible Citizen and I really 5:03appreciate that anthropic is being 5:05thoughtful about that in the way they're 5:06doing Cloud computer use but 5:08inadvertently by so tightly limiting 5:11Commerce we may be channeling that 5:13commercial Instinct where we don't want 5:15it to go toward goat Cults and memec 5:17coins so I know you didn't think I could 5:19connect the goat Cults and the mem coins 5:22with Claud computer use but I did and 5:24I'm curious what you think where where 5:26do you think you've seen instances where 5:29l are already doing economic activity 5:32and if you've seen them how has that 5:34been has that been something where you 5:36would say they're adding value they're 5:37sort of driving business forward Etc or 5:39has it felt more like the rug pulling 5:41and the Goat coins all right cheers 5:43don't buy goat coins and this is not 5:44investment advice but for goodness sake 5:46it's a meme coin all right cheers
