Edge Computing Revolutionizes Retail and Finance

Key Points

  • Edge Computing lets retailers capture far more in‑store interactions (beyond the checkout) via smart devices, unlocking deep, real‑time personalization of the shopping experience.
  • It paves the way for fully automated stores and immersive AR/VR experiences, while also allowing retailers to harness external data sources for richer insights.
  • Because Edge combines cloud‑like scalability with localized processing, retailers can roll out these capabilities at lower cost and with minimal maintenance overhead.
  • In financial services, Edge enables real‑time analysis of ATM video and sensor data, instantly detecting safety threats or fraudulent activity.
  • This instantaneous risk detection can trigger immediate alerts to financial markets and trading systems, improving security and operational responsiveness.

0:04Today we're going to explore what happens 0:06when Edge Computing meets 3 distinct industries. 0:10This is "The Future of". 0:16Today, I'm going to be talking to Dr. Luca Marchi, 0:18an expert and leader in the retail industry. 0:21So, Luca, thanks for joining me here today. 0:23What do you think is going to be 0:25the opportunity to transform the retail industry 0:29with the introduction of Edge Computing? 0:30Retailers, they gather a lot of data about their consumer, 0:33both internal and external, 0:35but the main touch point is the cashier, 0:38what you bought, at what price and when, 0:40how frequently you buy it. 0:42But think about how many different products you look at 0:46in a supermarket. 0:47All those things are not really captured. 0:50So, you can use smart devices in different areas of a store 0:54and collect those touch points 0:56and understand more deeply your customer behavior. 1:00So, really, the benefit of Edge Computing 1:04in the future of retail 1:05is really going to come from the power of personalization. 1:08Yeah, I totally agree. 1:09Personalization is going to be so important. 1:13You need to sell to everybody, 1:14but with very different and specific customer experience. 1:18So, what do you find most exciting about 1:21this emerging world of Edge Computing 1:23in the retail industry? 1:25Well, I believe there are 3 things 1:26that are super exciting. 1:28The first one, it could be the fully automated store. 1:31The second one is the ability to leverage data 1:35that is not generated in the store. 1:37And the third one is a complete immersive experience, 1:42characterized by virtual reality, or augmented reality. 1:46Which kind of brings us back to, then, 1:47the other part of the equation for the retailers, 1:51and the pressure that they're under economically 1:53is how to do so, 1:54how to introduce these capabilities at lower cost. 1:57So, Edge also has the great advantage of the Cloud, 2:01of being flexible and scalable. 2:03These really helps the cost-effectiveness 2:06of integrating and deploying an Edge network. 2:10Also, the maintenance costs are very limited, 2:12because you can still manage them centrally, 2:15but you are able to deploy different software 2:18according to the different situation. 2:21So, Luca, I really wanna thank you for being here today. 2:23It's going to be exciting, 2:24and I'm glad to have you here on board with us, 2:27to take us through that journey. 2:31Val, welcome, here. 2:33Thank you for bringing your expertise 2:35in the area of Financial Services. 2:37What does Edge Computing mean 2:39to the financial services industry? 2:41With Edge Computing we're able to go that next step 2:45of engagement with consumers anywhere, anytime. 2:48So, we have ATMs. 2:49In the ATM environment currently today 2:51there are cameras. 2:52We want to make sure it's a safe environment. 2:54But also, in the situation where there is fraud, 2:57they have the data collected 2:58to be able to, you know, look at the log files 3:01and see what happens. 3:02That's all post-event, though. 3:04So, what we can do now is, 3:06in real time, identify that we have a risk, 3:10either to human safety or to fraudulent behavior. 3:13And, with that, alert within financial markets, 3:16for example, and trading. 3:17Your decisions have to be made 3:18so rapidly in that environment. 3:21And, you know, the latency, 3:22network bandwidth, and sending things to the Cloud 3:24to make it such - 3:25it's just, it's prohibitive 3:26to the ability to bring those analytics 3:29right down to the Edge, where the data's created 3:31at the network, 3:32and then alert for decision-making in milliseconds, 3:36can be a huge differentiator in gains. 3:38To me, it's a very exciting time in our industry. 3:41Well, Val, thank you so much for being here today. 3:42Thank you for your insight, your expertise. 3:48So, Utpal, I want to thank you so much for being here today. 3:51So let's talk a little bit about 3:52the distinction between 5G and Edge, 3:54because we use them interchangeably sometimes, 3:56but in fact they're quite different, aren't they? 3:58Absolutely. 3:59So, Edge use-case can also be done in 4G. 4:04Edge is independent of 5G. 4:06But 5G will provide a whole new set of opportunities 4:11or use-cases that never existed in a 4G environment. 4:15A classic example would be a use-case 4:17which existed in 4G, but it may not have those latency, 4:22may not have those network slicing features, 4:25may not have those bandwidths, 4:26and so its ability to be powerful, 4:29or impactful, would be limited. 4:315G will transform it. 4:345G is the fuel for Edge computing. 4:36Absolutely. 4:37That's a right way of putting it. 4:38If I'm a CIO for a telco (telecommunications company), 4:41what should I be thinking about in terms of my future 4:45and where I need to be taking the business? 4:47We talk about their industry 4:49in 3 strategic imperatives. 4:51The first one is digital customer engagement. 4:54How do you improve the experience for the end user? 4:57The second one is network and Cloud agility. 5:00How do you leverage Cloud, 5:01virtualize networks, et cetera? 5:03And then the third one is enterprise transformation. 5:06And so it really kind of comes down 5:07to accelerating delivery of value, 5:10reducing operating costs and then increasing efficiency, 5:13and getting a deeper return on investment. 5:15Absolutely. 5:16I mean, the telcos are going to be the key enablers 5:20for ensuring that the industries take advantage of the 5G. 5:24This was a great conversation. 5:26I appreciate your expertise 5:27and all the things that you've had to say 5:29about the telco industry, 5:30the world of 5G and Edge Computing. Thank you. 5:33Thank you very much, Rob. 5:34It's exciting. 5:35Really enjoyed this conversation.
