Elon Musk’s Wild Week of Mega Announcements

Key Points

  • Elon Musk unveiled a suite of new products in one week, including an interactive robot, a self‑driving car and van, and demonstrated the first successful “Mech‑Zilla” catch of a Super Heavy rocket booster.
  • He also activated the world’s largest AI supercomputing cluster—100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs—setting a record by getting it operational in just 19 days.
  • To meet the GPU demand, Musk redirected several thousand units originally destined for Tesla to his X (formerly Twitter) platform, effectively turning the social‑media company into an AI powerhouse.
  • The rapid, cross‑company pivots illustrate Musk’s willingness to take high‑stakes, seemingly impossible risks across automotive, robotics, aerospace, and AI domains.
  • The speaker reflects that such bold risk‑taking contrasts with a generally risk‑averse tech culture, prompting consideration of where measured risk might yield future opportunities.

0:00we had one of the wildest weeks in Tech 0:02we've ever had it had nothing to do with 0:04open AI or Google or Amazon it had 0:07everything to do with a family of 0:09companies owned by Elon Musk I am not an 0:12Elon Fanboy on this site I barely talk 0:15about him but I have to acknowledge what 0:18happened in the last week let me go 0:20through because I don't know that 0:21everyone has realized that all of these 0:24happened in the space of a week so Elon 0:27introduces a apparently independent 0:30robot that interacts with the crowd yes 0:32there's probably some tea operation but 0:34you can see the writing on the wall Elon 0:37introduces a self-driving car Elon 0:39introduces a self-driving van all at an 0:42event at the Warner lot in La that alone 0:45would be a massive weeken Tech that's 0:47for his company 0:49Tesla then just on 0:52Sunday the mech Zilla which is literally 0:56right out of a science fiction film Elon 0:58tweeted about the fact that he wanted to 1:01have big science fiction arms catch his 1:03giant 1:04rocket then he built it and then it 1:07worked because the maxella caught the 1:11super heavy booster on the first 1:13try and the videos all around the world 1:15you can see it 1:18everywhere and everyone is rightly 1:20flabbergasted it's it's like taking a 1:22skyscraper into the sky and then gently 1:25placing it back down exactly where you 1:26want it to be so he did that too on on 1:30top of the robot on top of the taxi on 1:31top of the 1:32van and then that wasn't enough he also 1:37turned on the world's biggest 1:39supercomputing cluster in a world record 1:42of 19 1:43days and that got done this week too so 1:46100,000 h100s from 1:48Nvidia and it all got done it got turned 1:51on it got ready to train for an AI run 1:55in just 19 days now there are some 1:58benefits he got from having multiple 2:00companies here because apparently to get 2:02the h100s at the last minute he was 2:04still short um a few 2:06thousand and he redirected several 2:08thousand units that were headed to Tesla 2:11over to X which is the company formerly 2:13known as Twitter and now apparently owns 2:18the biggest AI supercomputing cluster in 2:20the world not open AI it's wild uh so he 2:24redirected it over there um and that's 2:27how he got to 100,000 but regardless his 2:29incredible achievement and here's my 2:33reflection if this person is willing to 2:36take these kinds of Serial risks risk 2:38after risk after risk with these 2:40companies he's pivoting a car company 2:43into a robotics company he is doing 2:46something that everyone says is 2:48physically impossible with his rocket 2:50company and he's taking a social media 2:53company and turning it into an AI 2:55company these are non-trivial risks they 2:58might not work I'm not here to to say 3:00just cuz he had a good week they're all 3:01going to work but if he is risk on right 3:04now if he is willing to take risks it 3:07suggests to me that the prevailing 3:11attitude I see 3:14among most of my colleagues that I work 3:16with in Tech maybe to risk 3:19averse this may not be a time to be 3:23riskof and so I don't have the resources 3:26to go put up a supercomputing cluster in 3:2719 days I'm not building the next 3:29mazilla 3:31but I am thinking about where am I to 3:35risk 3:36averse where might I benefit from being 3:39a little bit more risk on so that's your 3:41thought for the day thanks Elon quite a 3:43Week in Tech
