JobRight AI Companion Redefines Job Search

Key Points

  • Building consumer‑facing AI products is tough due to rapid changes, but Jobr (a job‑search tool) demonstrates a successful approach.
  • Unlike niche tools such as Teal that focus only on resume optimization, Jobr integrates an AI‑powered “companion” directly into the core job‑search workflow, offering broader, more native assistance.
  • The platform adopts a largely free, credit‑based model that lowers price‑sensitivity for job seekers while still converting high‑usage users to paid plans.
  • Jobr’s AI is trained on a wide range of job titles, which can lead to industry‑specific misunderstandings (e.g., inflating banking titles for product‑management roles), highlighting the need for continual refinement.
  • Despite these imperfections, the case study shows that moving quickly with a functional AI companion can capture market interest and drive user adoption.

0:00it's really really hard to build a 0:02consumer facing product right now 0:04because AI is changing so fast but I 0:07want to tell you about one that I think 0:09is an excellent case study and how you 0:11can do it successfully we're going to 0:13talk about job. a today it's a job 0:17search tool and the reason I'm calling 0:20it out is because we have had other AI 0:23tools in the past in the last year or so 0:26that are aimed at exactly the same 0:27demographic that job right targets so 0:30for example teal teal is a Resume 0:33Builder teal is focused on the part of 0:35your job search where you have to modify 0:37edit update your resume they're zeroed 0:39in on keyword fits they're zeroed in on 0:41matching you to the job description they 0:43absolutely have added value at least 0:45anecdotally with folks I've talked to 0:48job right goes a step further and I 0:50think one of the things I want to call 0:52out is that job right is much much 0:56better much more native at positioning 0:59what AI can do in a job search than 1:03other AI tools that I've seen in the 1:05space so one of the things I've talked 1:07about in the past is that if you jump 1:09over an industry if you're not in job 1:10search if you're in Social and you're 1:12talking about dating apps AI companions 1:15are huge they're one of the first places 1:17to monetize jobright has taken the idea 1:21of an AI companion and they've pulled it 1:24into the heart of the job search that's 1:25a really creative Insight it ties into a 1:28directly monetizable 1:30uh product offering that's been 1:31successful in other categories and they 1:34put it right at the heart of the job 1:36search experience and that's not all 1:39they have made it largely free not 1:41entirely free but largely free so if you 1:44are searching in volume you are going to 1:47run into their pay wall because you are 1:49going to use their AI credits fast 1:51enough that you will need to pay to 1:53unlock but for people who are just 1:55trying it out who want to understand who 1:57want to have a conversation who want to 1:59see where they're at the job market job 2:01right has made sure that it's entirely 2:03free to use and I think that's really 2:05good positioning on their part because 2:08people who are looking for a role tend 2:09to be pretty price sensitive and so if 2:12you can give them something that gives 2:15them value they are going to be super 2:17happy with it now it's not perfect so 2:21for example I was playing with it and 2:22one of the things I noticed for product 2:24management roles is that it doesn't yet 2:26know that banking jobs severely inflate 2:31titles and so it was calling out for 2:34instance vice president of product 2:36management at JP Morgan Chase or vice 2:39president of product management at Bank 2:40of America and I know and everyone who 2:43works in product knows that that's about 2:45the role of a senior product manager but 2:48because job right was trained on a wider 2:51array of job titles and it wasn't sort 2:53of specialized in particular Industries 2:54necessarily it didn't pick up on that so 2:58are there things to work through yes yes 3:00do I think that's an interesting case 3:01study in going fast regardless I do 3:04because if you have something that's a 3:06companion if you have something that is 3:08going to let you chat with an AI bot 3:12that understands you you've uploaded 3:14your resume you've given it your 3:16LinkedIn but also the job market and can 3:19put the two together for you that can 3:21find LinkedIn connections for you that 3:23would help you as you go along your way 3:25and apply to 3:26roles that's good enough right like and 3:29they launched with that in mind and they 3:30were very successful I think they were 3:32number one on product hunt recently so 3:34they don't need this right like this is 3:36not a plug for them or anything I'm just 3:37you calling them out as a case study in 3:41how to think strategically about 3:42building Ai and consumer applications 3:45they pulled in that companion side and 3:47they talk about how to job search in a 3:51way that feels intuitive and so they put 3:53you right into the flow that you look at 3:54the way your job title maps onto open 3:57rolls right now they're keeping you off 3:59of LinkedIn it's in their interface and 4:01they talk about how your 4:03role may or may not match with your 4:07exact resume and how to change it in a I 4:10think the most supportive way I've seen 4:11so many times it's like these are the 4:13skills that are missing and you don't 4:14know how to fix it but they have figured 4:17out a way to essentially call out the 4:20positiveness of the fit score so they 4:22have 80% 90% fits whatever and then if 4:25you choose to get interested in the role 4:27they encourage you to edit the resume 4:29and then Supply you an immediate edit to 4:32the resume that fixes the issues and 4:35shows what they changed and you can 4:37check and I did play with it and I could 4:39see that it was not just making stuff up 4:42so this is not a situation where they 4:43just used an llm and they you know made 4:47things up and and they're writing 4:48fiction into your resume that you're 4:50going to get in trouble for they just 4:52seem to be reframing the resume and 4:54adding in more relevant keywords uh and 4:57I think that that's something that's 4:58going to help a lot of 5:00folks who are looking to figure out how 5:02to more accurately fit job descriptions 5:04because like it or not getting that job 5:07description fit really does matter and 5:08getting a clear resume would help 80 or 5:1190% of 5:13applicants there's one thing that they 5:15don't have the thing they don't have is 5:19a solution to the arms race that we're 5:21in right now and I don't expect them to 5:23but when you have something like job 5:25right what you need is an ability to to 5:30actually connect with people and be 5:33referred into a 5:35role and I think that they are bringing 5:38the arms race mentality that we've seen 5:42dominate the cold apply 5:44pipeline into networking a little bit 5:47because they're calling out these 5:48LinkedIn connections for the first time 5:50that might not be visible to people 5:52otherwise and at least not very easily 5:55right like you can dig for it but but 5:57fewer people are going to do that 6:00and when you do that and you start to 6:02scale you're going to see more and more 6:04LinkedIn DMS come in and so the the 6:07demand side of the job market just 6:10continues to find innovations that 6:13essentially scale Up the Volume facing 6:18recruiters the volume facing hiring 6:19managers in the job search process 6:22whenever not just me hiring but whenever 6:25anyone in my company is hiring my 6:27LinkedIn DMS get full because people 6:30find me and they start to DM me I think 6:32that's going to get worse and the 6:34problem is because the demand s side is 6:37so strong and because AI tools like 6:40jobri are helping people to do a better 6:42job which is good for you 6:44individually they're creating a 6:47Marketplace that is really tough for all 6:49of us collectively because we are all 6:52going to look like we are as strong as 6:55we possibly can be we are all going to 6:57be exactly customized and fitted some of 6:59the things that used to be markers of 7:01individual effort are disappearing like 7:04the the cold Linked In DM used to be a 7:06marker of individual effort in six 7:08months it won't be anymore customizing 7:10your resume used to be a marker of 7:12individual effort in six months it won't 7:14be anymore in fact it probably isn't 7:17now so what helps you to distinguish 7:21yourself and I think what we're going to 7:22see is we're going to see more emphasis 7:24from employers on case studies on work 7:27that you do during the process and and I 7:29think that we are still short of tooling 7:33that employers can use to more 7:35adequately assess the candidates that 7:37they get in because right now given the 7:40volume and given the very consistent 7:42quality that you're getting from 7:43candidates at least on the surface it's 7:46really really hard to differentiate and 7:49find people who are actually going to be 7:50a good fit for your particular role we 7:52still don't have that idea of 7:55communicating more precisely within a 7:57role what you need in a way that you can 8:01call out really clearly and only get 8:04applicants that are truly a fit for the 8:06skill sets or sort of the sub skill sets 8:09within a job title that fit like for 8:10example in product management maybe you 8:13are only tolerating someone with very 8:16specific previous platform PM 8:19experience we don't really have a good 8:21frame in the market to match those 8:23skills but that's effectively what 8:25employers are trying to do when they're 8:27looking through piles of I generated 8:30resumés and applications and DMS today 8:33so to wrap all of this up I think job 8:35right is an excellent example of an 8:37individual app that has been created 8:39that puts AI right at the heart of job 8:41search I think they've done a lot of 8:43things right and I think that they are 8:46part of a larger motion that is putting 8:49enormous strain on the job market as a 8:51whole and that makes things really 8:54really challenging for all of us 8:57together even if individually the job 8:59right tool is absolutely brilliant and 9:01that's not just me saying that I've had 9:03people tell me this is incredible I 9:04found roles that I wouldn't find 9:06otherwise Etc so if you as an individual 9:09want to use it it seems like it's 9:10working pretty well for all of us 9:13together it's a tough world out there 9:15and we need to figure out how to more 9:17effectively match talent but that's a 9:18larger 9:21[Music] 9:28conversation for
