Mainframe Myths Debunked: Modern Reality

Key Points

  • Modern IBM mainframes (Z series) use the latest Telum processors, which can consolidate roughly 40 Linux workloads onto a single chip and include built‑in AI and dedicated I/O acceleration for ultra‑fast transaction processing.
  • Despite perceptions of high cost, these systems are far more sustainable, delivering up to 75 % lower energy consumption and 67 % less data‑center space while handling millions of transactions per second—far outpacing typical cloud‑based solutions.
  • The required skill set is contemporary: developers can use modern tools and languages such as Git, VS Code, Python, Java, Node.js, and Go, eliminating the need to work with archaic 3270 green‑screen interfaces.
  • Mainframes support cloud‑native workloads by running OpenShift and containerized Linux environments alongside traditional z/OS, enabling hybrid‑cloud architectures that span multiple clouds and on‑premise resources.
  • Ultimately, the Z platform combines high‑throughput, guaranteed reliability, and modern development practices, making it a compelling choice for today’s enterprise IT strategies.

0:00so when you think of the Mainframe what 0:03do you think old expensive outdated 0:08maybe you think about those movies with 0:10the tapes spinning vacuum tubes even 0:14worse well to give me just five minutes 0:17and let me tell you the reality of the 0:19Mainframe today so let's start with 0:21these myths the first myth we think 0:24about is old 0:26and old systems well the reality the 0:31reality is today we have the latest 0:33telum processor the telom processor 0:37provides the ability to take 40 0:39approximate Linux systems and run them 0:42on one telom chip in addition to that it 0:46has a built-in AI processor and separate 0:50i o processing which allows you to 0:52process much faster from data access 0:55standpoint so I can do that high 0:58transaction processing 1:00now think about that transaction come in 1:03about 40 to 1. well that goes to the 1:07next one expensive if we think about 1:09expensive 1:12and we think the Mainframe is expensive 1:14if I can already consolidate 40 to 1 1:18that's already impressive but we care a 1:21lot about sustainability today as well 1:23so let's think about it we can take 75 1:27percent less energy usage 75 percent 1:31less energy usage in using the system 1:34and 67 percent less space in my data 1:39center by using Z boxes 1:42significantly improves my sustainability 1:45message while I can still do large 1:48transaction processing and just for 1:51another small comparison in the same 1:55time Google can process 60 000 1:58transactions Aziz running 2 million 2:02transactions think about that now the 2:06next problem that always comes up is 2:08skills if you think about skills and the 2:11use of skills what skills do I need do 2:15you think I have to use that 3270 green 2:18screen you might show on some movies 2:20still well no you can use all the modern 2:24tools that we have in the environment 2:26modern SCM of git vs code python 2:31infrastructure is code all the current 2:34Concepts all the current processes and 2:38you can interact with the system and all 2:40the modern languages I already said 2:42python one of the most common languages 2:45people like to use today not only for 2:47infrastructure for scripting for just 2:49General application development but also 2:52Java node go and all the traditional 2:56languages that we have in Z so I can do 2:59and work with it in the same way 3:02and 3:04let's think about Cloud everybody's 3:07trying to look at Cloud today and talk 3:09about Cloud native 3:11well when we think about the Mainframe 3:14machine it can run openshift 3:17and if we think about open shift in 3:20environment that's what people are 3:22looking at for their Cloud native 3:24applications building containers and 3:26providing Linux environments all of that 3:29is available natively with a z platform 3:32in addition to the zos environment which 3:35allows you to run those High transaction 3:37throughput guaranteed reliability 3:40transactions you need today 3:42so it really we need to look at hybrid 3:46Cloud not just Cloud you're not going to 3:49run in one Cloud you're going to run in 3:51multiple clouds and you're going to run 3:53on-prem that combination including z 3:56provides the best capabilities for your 3:59business today 4:01now 4:02hopefully I've convinced you but if I 4:05haven't 4:06then go try it yourself go to IBM cloud 4:09and you know how you can get Intel today 4:12well go pick a z processor and go play 4:15with Linux on Z or zos and try it out 4:18yourself and see that it's really the 4:22modern machine that it is today 4:25thanks for watching if you like this 4:28video and would like to see more videos 4:30like this just click like And subscribe
