OpenAI Eyes Robotics Revival

Key Points

  • OpenAI has been quietly rebuilding its robotics ambitions, hiring top hardware designers like former Apple design lead Johnny IV and reportedly exploring wearables as well as reviving a robot division shut down in 2021.
  • The rise of ChatGPT integration into third‑party robots (e.g., Figure’s factory bots) makes a physical‑world AI offering increasingly attractive for OpenAI’s leadership.
  • Re‑entering robotics would place OpenAI in a “second‑place” position, requiring a long‑term effort to catch up against established hardware players, which raises strategic hesitation.
  • Despite the robotics challenge, the speaker believes OpenAI is likely to pursue some kind of physical device—whether a robot or a wearable—to control the customer interaction space.
  • The base prediction is that OpenAI will unveil a prototype of its physical‑AI product by the end of 2025.

0:00one of the big questions in AI has been 0:02to what extent physical form factors are 0:04going to be tackled by the model makers 0:07which is a fancy way of saying will open 0:10AI do robotics will Google do robotics 0:13will meta do robotics we do have some of 0:16the answer we've seen what I would call 0:19breadcrumbs along the way in 2024 to 0:21suggest that open AI is strongly 0:24considering 0:25robotics they have hired some of the 0:29best physical device designers in the 0:31world including Johnny IV who used to 0:34work on design at Apple they are 0:37supposedly exploring making a wearable 0:40with Johnny we will see no prototype has 0:42yet leaked and just a couple of days ago 0:45news broke that they are seriously 0:48thinking about building robots again and 0:50I say again because they actually shut 0:52down their robot division in 2021 this 0:54was really before chat GPT caught on you 0:57remember when 3.5 came out this is not 1:00something that you would allow to drive 1:02a robot it wasn't making those kinds of 1:04decisions and now chat GPT is actually 1:08inside other company's robots for 1:11example figure which is shipping robots 1:13to factories now uses chat GPT in the 1:16brains of the robot it's natural if 1:18you're a CEO in Sam alman's position to 1:21think to yourself would it make sense 1:23for my company to get into robotics 1:25should I reawaken the robotics 1:28division well that's an interesting 1:29interesting question I think one of the 1:32bigger pieces they need to tackle is 1:34whether they as a company strategically 1:36are willing to play from behind I've 1:40been in a company that plays from behind 1:42Amazon was a rare second place player in 1:45video when I was there in Prime video 1:48Netflix dominated it was a very strange 1:51feeling to be in an otherwise dominant 1:53company and to be playing in a second 1:55place division that was working on 1:57catching up that is what would be 1:59happening in robotics at open AI unlike 2:02the rest of the company where open AI 2:04enjoys an advantage and is widely 2:06considered one of the leaders in the AI 2:08space it's a very different thing and 2:10it's very very difficult and takes a 2:12long time to catch up in those 2:14situations so I don't know if they're 2:16actually going to invest in robotics I 2:18am much more confident that they will 2:20invest in some kind of physical device 2:22it makes too much sense for them not to 2:25be in the physical world since so much 2:27of the customers interaction with AI is 2:30going to be in the physical space you 2:31might as well own the device and so I 2:34feel good about predicting that they 2:35will get into physical devices robots 2:38may be one way they do that but they may 2:41find it easier just to work with Johnny 2:42IV and get into wearables or something 2:44like that we will see either way I think 2:47my base case bet is we see some kind of 2:49a prototype before the end of next year 2:51before the end of 2025 you tell me what 2:54you think
