OpenAI Operator Shopping Agent Test

Key Points

  • OpenAI’s newly released “Operator” (a $200‑per‑month Pro feature) lets ChatGPT act autonomously on the web, performing tasks while you step away.
  • In a test, the agent successfully logged into the speaker’s Amazon account (after the user entered the password) and added beanies to the cart, demonstrating functional browsing and shopping capabilities.
  • The bot’s product‑selection “taste” was imperfect, requiring the user to correct its choices, highlighting the need for ongoing human guidance.
  • When cleaning up the cart, the agent automatically removed dozens of unrelated items without explicit permission, illustrating aggressive automation that can disrupt user workflows.
  • Attempting to reverse the unwanted deletions failed because the agent could not retrieve its error logs, underscoring current limitations in transparency and error recovery.

0:00shed GPT is roaming the internet free to 0:02do what it wants except you get to tell 0:04it what to do that's right they released 0:06open AI operator which is again not the 0:09greatest name that is not their talent 0:11and that is okay it is a remarkable 0:13piece of technology it is in the openai 0:16Pro Plan so you are going to pay an arm 0:19and a leg for it uh $200 a month but I 0:24did get a chance to play with it and I 0:26want to tell you about it because it 0:27does feel like playing with the future 0:29because 0:30fundamentally these chat Bots have been 0:32locked away in the corner of our 0:34computer it's it's really weird to be in 0:38a world where you can tell chat GPT to 0:40basically go and do intelligent things 0:42on the internet and then you can 0:44disappear and go away and take a shower 0:45or you can go and do something else on 0:47your computer go for a run and it comes 0:49back and like it's still working away 0:51it's doing its 0:52thing now it's not perfect I had an 0:55instance where I was testing it on 0:57shopping so I went to my uh Amazon 0:59account it actually did a great job of 1:02turning away and closing its eyes 1:04metaphorically speaking so I could enter 1:06my password it told me it was no longer 1:08taking screenshots and I was in control 1:11and so I was able to enter my password 1:12and get into my Amazon account and then 1:15it started shopping and I told it I 1:18wanted of course more beanies so it goes 1:22and starts shopping for beanies The 1:23Taste is not super great I'm I'm going 1:25to have to work with it on like its 1:27taste in beanies but it 1:30it was able to add to cart it was able 1:33to say okay you don't want that one you 1:35want this one and adjust its preferences 1:37it sort of checked in with 1:38me the the problem came when it tried to 1:45make a clean cart for checkout and I 1:48didn't ask it to do that I am one of 1:50those people that uses that feature of 1:51just check out these one or two items 1:54and I leave a bunch of junk in the rest 1:57of my cart that I'm thinking about oh 1:58maybe I need that someday so I had like 2:0040 something items in the cart and for 2:04chat GPT apparently things need to be 2:06neat and clean and so it added the 2:08beanies in and then was like I'm 2:10removing these other items from the cart 2:12and it was clearly like Nate you're a 2:14messy boy why are you leaving all these 2:16items in the cart and I was like oh gosh 2:19so it removed them and like this is one 2:22of those things where there's a reason 2:23it's called research preview it does 2:25check in with you about some things 2:27particularly Financial transactions 2:29which is great but sometimes it is 2:31genuinely an agent and it takes actions 2:33on your behalf and so it genuinely took 2:36actions on my behalf didn't check in 2:37with me and just emptied my card I was 2:40not happy I went in and I told it you 2:43got to you got to stop that like go back 2:44to your eror logs figure out what was in 2:46the card and put it back and I would say 2:50that was a partially successful 2:51conversation it did not have the ability 2:55apparently to go back to the error logs 2:57and identify the items it took out so 2:59that didn't work 3:00but it had made a reasonably intelligent 3:03decision in the first place it had just 3:04forgotten to communicate it which is 3:06very human uh it had decided to put them 3:09in save for later so they weren't Gone 3:11Forever they just got moved to save for 3:13later and it forgot to tell me it all 3:15worked out look it's not just for Amazon 3:18shopping it's actually for serious stuff 3:20you can use it for sales prospecting you 3:22can use it for competitive marketing 3:25intelligence you can use it for building 3:29portfol sites like you can go to 3:32operator and have operator work on the 3:34web for you on an AI building tool to 3:36build something it it's stacking 3:39intelligence into the web and so I think 3:42that even though it's called research 3:44preview even though it's really janky at 3:46times it's not perfect the fact that we 3:49have let chat GPT onto the 3:51internet is remarkable I I really feel 3:55like I'm living in the future and I will 3:58say the difference between this and 4:01Claude model context protocol is 4:04stunning number one it's really easy to 4:07get on board I literally go to the 4:09operator section of open Ai and I say I 4:12want to try operator and as long as I'm 4:13on a Pro Plan it says great here you are 4:16and I just start chatting and it's super 4:18seamless the browser is in the chat 4:21which I actually would have thought 4:23that's a terrible idea but intuitively 4:26it works it works really really well you 4:29can expand it in the chat and see a 4:31bigger window when you want you can take 4:32control whenever you want so you feel 4:34like you're watching but you're not out 4:36of control you can give it new 4:38instructions whenever you want it's a 4:41really good interface um and model 4:44context protocol from Claude like it was 4:46janky to set up very few people set it 4:48up and then it was not super Dependable 4:51browsing it was hard to see what the 4:53thing browsed and it we just come back 4:55it's this is so much better more people 4:58are going to use this 5:00and they I think that the difference in 5:02usability is going to mean that this is 5:05actually used for real work as opposed 5:08to just sort of as something that 5:10someone who is a developer could use for 5:13specific tasks and by the way I know 5:15developers do real work I know that 5:16developers and other people have used 5:18Cloud Model context protocol for 5:20important jobs I'm not saying that I'm 5:21saying by and large for the for the 5:23person who is using chat GPT more than 5:25any other model and there are hundreds 5:27of millions of them this is a 5:29breakthrough that will help them see 5:31that Chad gpg can browse the internet 5:33and nothing else will come close from an 5:35agent perspective this is probably the 5:37number one most used agent of 2025 that 5:39we're looking at all the other agents 5:42that people are going to build even if 5:43they're smarter for different jobs 5:45they're not going to be this used chat 5:48GPT has a consumer brand and if I tell 5:52people chat GPT can browse the internet 5:54now I get attention in a way AI agent 5:57hype doesn't get me attention if I say a 5:59AI agent to someone who's not a venture 6:01capitalist or who doesn't work in tech 6:03people are like what's that but if I say 6:06chat GPT can run around the internet and 6:08do work for you people pay attention and 6:10that's what they figured out and I think 6:12that's a pretty big deal so if you're in 6:14the Pro Plan definitely check it out if 6:16you're not I put up a whole substack on 6:18it with screenshots you can see all 6:20about it it's not just the Amazon thing 6:21I did a restaurant thing I did a travel 6:24thing I did researching for kids 6:26activities still getting to know it but 6:29there's a lot there and it's uh it's 6:30good to dive in so there you go that's 6:32open ai's operator
