Seamless VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery

Key Points

  • Clients struggle to maintain IT infrastructure while adding business value, needing a way to shift workloads to the cloud without large upfront investments.
  • By using an IBM Cloud bare‑metal offering that runs a full VMware stack, workloads can be moved live to the cloud with zero VM conversion and seamlessly reverted to on‑premise after an incident.
  • This approach transforms disaster‑recovery from infrequent, disruptive “big‑bang” tests into continuous, flexible cloud extensions that can run for days or weeks and then be returned, minimizing downtime.
  • IBM’s support, rapid delivery, and scalability enable capabilities and ecosystem complexity that were previously unattainable for these clients.

0:04When we look at the clients that we're dealing with 0:06The key problems that they're facing 0:08Are around how do they maintain their IT infrastructure 0:11While also adding value to the business 0:14To allow those organizations to focus their IT people on key skills 0:19And key activities that the business will value 0:22They need to be able to move their current workloads 0:24Into that cloud context without a massive investment 0:32When we looked at that seamless transition without conversion 0:36We wanted to have a VMware-based cloud solution 0:39And clearly IBM Cloud with its bare-metal server offering 0:43Where we can run a complete VMware stack 0:46Allows us to protect our client workloads 0:49Onto a VMware platform with zero conversion of their source virtual machine 0:54And allow them to run it live in the cloud 0:57And also revert back to an on-premise 0:59After any incident that has happened 1:01The entire experience is completely seamless to the client 1:04And ensures that they have minimal downtime 1:07And minimum potential disruption to their organization 1:13In a disaster recovery solution 1:16Typically clients would have done big band tests 1:19Once or twice a year where they look at bringing 1:22Large swathes of their technology live 1:25To test that it's valid 1:27And then they'd shut it down again 1:28Very time intensive, it was very invasive 1:30To the day-to-day operations of most organizations 1:33What our clients are now doing 1:35Is on an ongoing basis 1:37Moving workloads to the cloud 1:38And allow them to run for a period of days or weeks 1:41In a live context 1:43And then reverting them back to their original location 1:46Treating the cloud presence 1:48As an extension of their on premise environment 1:51And that's giving them a huge amount of flexibility 1:53About how they approach disaster recovery planning 1:56And certainly on the functionality of their systems 2:03IBM as an organization have being incredibly supportive 2:06The consistency of the behavior, the speed of delivery 2:10The scale that we can achieve with IBM Cloud 2:12These are things we couldn't do previously 2:14And these are elements of a complex IT ecosystem 2:18That we're exposing to our clients 2:20In a way that wasn't possible previously
