Stay Ahead: Quick AI Voice Insights

Key Points

  • AI is evolving so fast that you should aim for a quick, approximate grasp of new concepts and then move on, rather than trying to master every detail.
  • Pay attention to emerging technologies on the “ragged edge” of adoption—understand them well enough to assess their impact on your work and career, then keep learning as they evolve.
  • AI voice interfaces, while not yet widely released by OpenAI, promise hands‑free interaction with LLMs that could let users query models without switching screens.
  • Voice‑cloning tech is already being weaponized for disinformation, exemplified by deep‑fake political ads and a recent fraud call that fooled a Ferrari executive by mimicking a CEO’s voice.
  • Rather than deep‑diving into every new tool, stay aware of the broader applications of large language models and the impending rise of AI voice to anticipate and mitigate related risks.

0:01one of the things I see really 0:03consistently is that because AI is new 0:05because AI is something that we are all 0:08struggling to wrap our hands around 0:11there is a sense of oh my gosh this is 0:14too much changed I cannot handle another 0:16net new thing but the change keeps 0:19coming the change keeps happening and 0:21one of the things I want to encourage 0:22you to do is to think about your degree 0:24of understanding as something that you 0:26can approximate get okay at 0:28understanding and then move on to the 0:29next thing quickly because the knowledge 0:32base is changing so fast I'm going to 0:34give you some specific examples here to 0:35help you understand what I mean I think 0:38the larger takeaway is you need to think 0:42about what isn't here yet but is on the 0:44horizon or what is arriving in ragged 0:46edges from a tech perspective and is 0:49just sort of popping up in a few places 0:52as a as a sign that you should be 0:54focused on understanding that piece of 0:56tech at least enough to know what the 0:58implications are for you for your work 1:00for your career and do so quickly and 1:02approximately just get the general idea 1:06and then keep learning because it's 1:07going to change next week anyway all 1:10right so what's an example that comes to 1:11mind AI voice is the one I want to 1:14select at the end of the day most of us 1:18have not had a ton of experience with AI 1:20Voice open AI talked about voice as a 1:24core input but hasn't really unlocked 1:27voice for most folks yet as a way way to 1:30engage with the llm the understanding or 1:33anecdotes out of open AI is that it's a 1:35real game Cher because you can talk to 1:37the llm as a companion to figure things 1:40out while you are working on something 1:42else so you can just say hey chat GPT 1:45can you figure this out and then keep 1:47typing on your doc and not get 1:48distracted not switch Windows great that 1:51hasn't happened yet I love the idea but 1:55what has happened from an AI voice 1:58perspective is that people figuring out 2:00how to leverage voice clone technology 2:03to generate 2:05disinformation that's happening with 2:07political ads already in the 2024 2:09election cycle it's also happening uh in 2:12business it's happening there was a 2:14prominent case of a Ferrari executive 2:16that broke this week in Late July of 2:182024 where the exec got a call from 2:21someone claiming to be the CEO and it 2:24sounded like his CEO's voice and it was 2:27talking about mergers and acquisition 2:29and asking for information all of that 2:31and he got suspicious and he checked 2:35because something didn't check out the 2:37phone number didn't check out he was 2:38trying to understand what this person 2:40was asking for and it just didn't feel 2:43right and aligned with what his CEO 2:45would usually ask for and so what I want 2:48to suggest to you is not that you take 2:49that away and say oh my gosh I need to 2:52go and do two days of Deep dive on AI 2:55and voice no I think what you need to do 2:59do is understand that if you are focused 3:02on only the applications of large 3:04language models that you can see that 3:07you can understand now that you can use 3:09now you're probably 3:11behind and you actually need to think 3:13about the applications of llms that are 3:15right around the corner what's right 3:17around the corner for you what is going 3:19to arrive and feel like net new tech for 3:23most people in 6 months that's the 3:25question and how do you get an early 3:27approximation of that and kind of keep 3:28an eye on it because that's going to 3:30enable you to get an early sense of 3:31where those use cases are in your world 3:34an early sense of where the risks are 3:35the pitfalls are we talked about 3:37disinformation as a risk with AI voice I 3:39think there's also positive potential 3:41with AI voice it would be really helpful 3:45to have human voices that are able to 3:49interact 3:50autonomously and understand data and 3:53speak data that's a huge accessibility 3:55win it's also a win from the perspective 3:58of being being able to drive 4:02understanding of text across multiple 4:05mediums so some people are reading and 4:07they really fluent at reading sometimes 4:09you're on a walk and you just need to 4:10have it read to you it would be really 4:12helpful if you could have it read to you 4:15with the intended inflection of the 4:17person who wrote the document so that 4:20you know James who wrote the document 4:23could come back and read the document to 4:26you in your ear with your 4:28voice and and or with James's voice and 4:33help you understand it as if he read and 4:35wrote it that we are pretty close to 4:37that that is the kind of thing you 4:39should be Imagining the kind of thing 4:40you should be thinking about and 4:42understanding and reflecting on and I 4:45don't say this because the point is that 4:47the only Innovation is AI voice I say 4:50this because if you aren't thinking that 4:52the tech up ahead is going to be 4:55transformative you're probably missing 4:57out and so this is your my encouragement 4:59to you to say I understand what's going 5:02on right now approximately we're all 5:04sort of learning this as we go it is 5:07worth it to 5:08me to spend a little bit of time on 5:11Horizon 2 on what's up ahead so that I 5:14don't feel as lost when the net new 5:16thing comes and for me AI voice is one 5:19of those things there are other ones 5:21that come as well remember that AI 5:23arrives in a ragged fashion and remember 5:26that it is okay to not completely 5:28understand what's in front of you before 5:30you move on to the next thing those are 5:31the things I want you to take away
