0:00Today we're going to address something 0:02that I have never seen addressed 0:04anywhere on the web and I cannot figure 0:06out why. We have a dime a dozen guides 0:09for using AI APIs. We have dime a dozen 0:13guides for using the chatbot. And you 0:15know what I cannot find anywhere? I 0:18cannot find a guide that helps you if 0:22you are a chatbot user and you are 0:24wondering what the heck is going on with 0:26these people using the API. And I'm I'm 0:29saying that because I think we have this 0:31implicit assumption still that 0:33developers use APIs and normal people 0:36don't. That's not true anymore. 0:39Especially after the launch of Chat GPT5 0:41when it's possible to literally code up 0:44a whole front-end app in just a few 0:46minutes. What if you want to take that 0:48to the next level? What if you want to 0:49turn that into a real app? How do you 0:52start using the API? How do you know if 0:54you need to use it? How do you know if 0:56you might want to try using it? Because 0:57it's really not that scary. Especially, 1:00it's not that scary in an age when LLMs 1:03can help you use it. But still, nobody 1:06gives you a guide to know when you 1:07should use it and when you shouldn't and 1:09why you should be curious. That's what 1:11this video is for. Everyone will keep 1:14telling you use the API if you have a 1:17question that they can't answer in the 1:19chat box, but no one will explain why 1:21that's different. No one will explain 1:23how to get there. We're going to do it 1:24here. I'm going to assume you are paying 1:2820 to $25 a month for something like 1:30Claude or Chatg GPT plus maybe you're on 1:33the free version. It works fine. Why are 1:36people acting like you're doing it 1:38wrong? That doesn't seem fair. Well, 1:40first off, you're not doing it wrong. 1:42The way we use a general purpose 1:44technology is what suits us to get the 1:46work done. And one thing I want you to 1:48hear is that this video is about giving 1:50you optionality. It's about giving you a 1:54set of tools that you didn't have before 1:56to make better decisions. And so much of 1:59the value we get out of AI is just 2:01making better decisions. And so that's 2:03what I want to do, lay out the 2:04technology. So the first thing to 2:06realize, the first fundamental 2:08misunderstanding that people who only 2:10use the chatbot tend to think is they 2:12think they are using the real product, 2:15the real product, quote unquote. If 2:17you're using Claude as a chatbot, if 2:19you're using chat GPT as a chatbot, you 2:22think you're using the real product. 2:23Now, putting on my product manager hat 2:26for a second, you could argue that you 2:27are, right? Because if most people in 2:29the world are using the product, you can 2:31kind of say, well, by default, it must 2:33be the real thing. But the reason I say 2:35you're not actually using the real 2:38product, is that the chatbot is an 2:40intentionally limited demo. I'm going to 2:44say it again. The chatbot is an 2:45intentionally limited demo that is 2:48designed to be just good enough to hook 2:50you in. That is actually what chat GPT 2:53was trying to do when they released the 2:56original Chat GPT that went viral. They 2:58were they were releasing an 3:00intentionally limited demo. They never 3:02thought it would get as big as it did. 3:03And now they're stuck with this 3:04worldwide product on their hands that 3:06was meant to be a demo. As an example of 3:08what I mean by demo, reasoning mode in 3:10chat GPT5. Everyone thinks, well, you 3:13have three levels, right? You have chat 3:15JPG5 Pro, you have thinking mode, and 3:17you have fast mode, and people have 3:18their opinions about those, etc. We're 3:20not going to go into that. I've covered 3:21that elsewhere. What they don't realize 3:24is those are preset levels that just are 3:27there for demoing the possibilities. You 3:30can actually go and set reasoning 3:33efforts in the API and you can get more 3:36power than you could even get in Chad 3:38JPT5 Pro in the API. It's a good example 3:42of how the API tends to give you more of 3:44a paint palette for what you want to do. 3:47It's like having a set of power tools 3:49instead of just hand tools. If you know 3:51what you're doing, you can get a lot 3:53more done. And because documentation is 3:55so clean and so useful now and so 3:57readable by LLMs, even if you've never 4:00done it before, yes, you can use the 4:03API. You can another example Gemini 4:06gives you a different number of tokens 4:08in the web interface than they do in the 4:10API. Another example, chat GPT preserves 4:15state in the API, remembers past 4:17conversation and reasoning traces in the 4:19API in a way it doesn't in the chatbot. 4:22These are different products. You can 4:24tune what's called the temperature of 4:26the model in the API in a way that you 4:29cannot in the chatbot. So temperature is 4:31a way of measuring the creativity of the 4:34model. In the chatbot, Chad GPT just 4:37selects what it thinks the public wants 4:39and gives you that and there's no way to 4:40change it. You are not getting the full 4:43model capabilities that you are paying 4:45for. You're getting the safe for the 4:47general public version of the AI. And 4:49that's the first thing I want to clear 4:50up is people think these are the same 4:52product and anyone who has used a model 4:55in the API will tell you it feels like a 4:58different model. I also want to call out 5:00that the the cost comparison is not 5:04obvious to people, but it's really 5:06important to get right. You can actually 5:08spend less money in the API depending on 5:12what you need than you would spend for 5:14just $20 a month on the chatbot. It 5:16turns out if you're not using an 5:18expensive reasoning model, 20 bucks gets 5:21you a real real long ways. These are 5:24cheap, cheap, cheap cheap turns, 5:25especially for the smaller GPT5 models, 5:28especially for Gemini. Gemini is really 5:30cheap. One of the reasons why people in 5:33production applications use the API is 5:36because you can closely meter how much 5:38it costs. And it turns out when you're 5:40not paying a blanket price that some CFO 5:43has worked out that explains the overall 5:46average usage cost for all users kind of 5:49aggregated out. No, you just pay for 5:51what you get. It's like a toll road. You 5:53you you pay the meter and you use the 5:55road. That's how it works. It's very 5:57simple. It's very transparent. Another 5:59example of the utility. You can actually 6:02get using that features like that 6:04extended context window. You can get 6:07more work done in the API. This is going 6:10to depend on you. If you're just doing 6:11recipes with Chad GPT and you're 6:13perfectly happy, honestly, you're 6:15probably not watching anymore. Let's 6:16just let's just be honest. But if you 6:18want to do something that has a larger 6:21piece of work, let's say you want to 6:23work with Claude in the million token 6:26context window, that's going to be much 6:28more useful in the API. You got to work 6:30with the API so that you can effectively 6:32load in the context. And by the way, the 6:35API is how you more finely control the 6:38context in the prompt. If you're in the 6:40chatbot, there's a system prompt there 6:42that you just cannot get past. That is 6:45the first thing the chatbot sees. You've 6:48got more control in the API over what 6:51you make the system prompt. Again, more 6:53control, more tools, power tools, not 6:56hand tools. That's the metaphor I want 6:58you to keep in mind. One of the things 6:59that you are going to find out is that 7:02you want, if you're at all serious about 7:05work, you want your chatbot to plug in 7:07better to other parts of your workflow. 7:10You want to not just spend your day 7:12copying and pasting. This is where 7:14agents come in. They promise to take 7:16data from X and put it into Y. But you 7:19know what? A lot of people have gotten 7:21into APIs just to write integrations 7:24that let them put the LLM and the 7:27intelligence where they want it. I know 7:29people who have configured Obsidian, a 7:32note-taking app, so they can put LLMs 7:34where they want it in their notes, and 7:35they use the API for that. One of the 7:37things that Claude has done a really 7:38good job of is it's democratized access 7:41to tools through the model context 7:43protocol called MCP. And MCP servers let 7:46you call tools with your LLM and do all 7:49sorts of things. It's not very easy to 7:51do MCP calls in chat bots. It's barely 7:54possible in claude right now. It's so 7:56much easier in the API. It's so much 7:58easier in the API. In a sense, one of 8:01the things I am observing is that very 8:03old assumptions about code are scaring 8:07people and keeping them from actually 8:10accessing a way of working with AI that 8:12is in many ways easier than the chatbot. 8:15We get nervous around a terminal. We get 8:17nervous around code. I get it. We now 8:20have worldclass coding teachers on hand 8:24and they're getting better and better at 8:26teaching. In fact, Anthropic released an 8:28entire teaching mode for Claude Code 8:31just this week. Wow, that's really cool. 8:34Or maybe it was this past week. And so, 8:36it's easier and easier to use these 8:37APIs. Now, all of that being said, there 8:40are cases where maybe you don't need the 8:42API, right? If you are only using AI for 8:45brainstorming, if you're only using it 8:46for casual questions, if your biggest 8:48integration is, can you search the web 8:50for me? I don't want to sit here and 8:52pretend the API is going to be a 8:53breakthrough for you. I don't think 8:54that's it. If you love the back and 8:56forth conversational format rather than 8:58asking the LLM to do work and come back 9:00to you, the API may not be for you, and 9:03that's entirely fine. The whole purpose 9:05of this video is to let you make an 9:07informed decision. We all get to use 9:09this tool the way we want. I just don't 9:11want you to be scared of the API. So, 9:13what does an actual transition into API 9:15using look like? It's it's one of those 9:19things where one one day if you're doing 9:22work and you're using chat GPT or you're 9:24using clutter using Gemini more and more 9:27maybe you're using Grock you're going to 9:29hit a wall and you're going to hit that 9:31wall of frustration where you have tried 9:34something over and over again and you 9:36just are so frustrated. That's the 9:38moment I want you to remember this 9:40video. Let's say you've really really 9:42tried to get the tone right and you just 9:44can't and you want more configurability 9:46over the tone. Let's say you've tried 9:48reasoning and you don't have enough 9:49reasoning power. Or let's say you've 9:51tried to load a big piece of context and 9:53it's just not working. You need the API. 9:56You need the API. And that's okay 9:58because the API is there when it's 10:00ready. The API is going to give you 10:02great options. And look, I would not 10:04suggest if I were you that you switch 10:07models when you move to the API. 10:09Whatever you're currently using, you're 10:11using Chad JPT, use the Chad JPT API. 10:13You're using Cloud, use the Cloud API. 10:15Don't make it complicated. These are all 10:16fine. The thing to call out is that you 10:19will immediately have so many more 10:22options. And I'm going to give you as a 10:23review five of them that we've talked 10:26about briefly before, but I want to kind 10:27of underline them so you actually see 10:30what the API can do and you can make the 10:32call for yourself. Number one is 10:34function calling. That means the AI can 10:36trigger actions, not just generate text. 10:38Number two, structured outputs. Enable 10:41the AI to absolutely every time respond 10:45in JSON, respond in tables, respond in 10:47whatever format you want, every single 10:48time. Have system prompts that work. 10:51Number three, web interface system 10:53prompts are suggestions. API system 10:55prompts are more like the law. Number 10:57four, streaming responses. You can get 10:59words generated as they're generated. 11:01You don't have to wait for complete 11:02responses. Batch processing. You can 11:05send a thousand prompts at once and get 11:07responses overnight if you're willing to 11:09wait. There's all kinds of cool stuff 11:11you can do. And it's cheaper. It's 11:13cheaper unless you're using really 11:15expensive reasoning tokens, but even 11:16then it's not that expensive. Paying for 11:18what you use. It could be five bucks. It 11:21could be 500 bucks. And that can feel 11:22risky to people. But you can set budgets 11:24and it won't go past the budget. Like 11:26you can control that so it doesn't feel 11:28like it's too risky. Here's why this 11:30decision matters to you. It's not just 11:32about the tasks in front of you. The web 11:34interface is training you to think in 11:37chat format, question, answer, followup. 11:40The API trains you to think in 11:43workflows, input, process, output, and 11:45then integrate. The latter is more 11:48powerful. The latter lets you get more 11:50done. And that is why I want you to know 11:52what it feels like to use the API if 11:54you've never done it. Staying too long 11:56in the web interface if you have dreams 11:58of doing real work limits your 12:00imagination about what is possible. And 12:02that matters. matters to me. I want you 12:04to have the tools to make better 12:05choices. Moving to the API when you feel 12:08like you have to because it's trendy 12:10because Nate said so is also a bad idea. 12:12I'm not here to make you move to the 12:14API. I don't want you to waste time on 12:16complexity you don't need. And that's 12:18why I called out examples of uses that 12:20don't need it. If you're just searching 12:21the web, if you're just having 12:23conversations back and forth and you 12:24feel great about that, you don't feel a 12:26need for more work, do not use the API. 12:28Use this video as an excuse. The right 12:31transition time is when you face the 12:33interface friction that I described. I 12:36gave you some really tangible pain 12:37points I've seen. Recognize those pain 12:40points are not the fault of the AI. 12:43Those pain points are the fault of the 12:46demo interface you're engaged with. You 12:49can have better AI and you deserve it. 12:51So there you go. If you are asking, 12:54should I use the API? This is the this 12:56is the answer. If if if you are worried 12:59you can't use the API, this is my 13:01encouragement that you can. If you want 13:03a way to get started, this is how you do 13:06it. It's very simple. You go to your 13:08current chatbot and you say, "I want to 13:10learn to use the API. I've never done 13:12it. Give me step-by-step instructions. 13:15Please use current documentation. Please 13:18search the web and check your sources 13:20before you answer." That last bit is 13:22really important because LLMs tend to 13:25default to training data from their 13:26cutoff date, which is often early and 13:29out-of-date LLM documentation. So, make 13:31sure it searches the web, make sure that 13:33it finds the current documentation, and 13:35then have it explain it to you. Have it 13:37explain how to get started. And I would 13:39say if you have a point of frustration, 13:43be honest with your AI about the point 13:45of frustration and ask it how the API 13:48can help you. It can actually help you 13:50figure out how to bridge from your 13:53individual unique point of frustration 13:55to a world where the API can help you 13:57solve it.
